September marks World Suicide Prevention Month, a time to reflect, raise awareness, and support one another. This global initiative is led by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and the World Health Organization (WHO).
The theme for 2025 is: “Changing the Narrative: A Compassionate Approach to Suicide Prevention.”
Every life lost to suicide is one too many. In the UK, thousands of families, friends, and colleagues are impacted each year. On average, every 90 minutes someone in the UK dies by suicide, and 1 in 4 of us has experienced suicidal thoughts. The good news is: suicide is preventable.
How We Can All Help
Start conversations – Simply asking, “Are you okay?” can make a huge difference.
Be present – Listen without judgment to help someone feel less alone.
Know the signs – Withdrawal, hopelessness, or sudden mood changes may signal someone needs support.
Encourage support – Gently remind colleagues or loved ones that it’s okay to reach out for professional help.
Research shows that 60% of people say their suicidal thoughts were interrupted by someone close to them, while 14% were interrupted by a stranger.
Suicide is not inevitable. By intervening and showing care, you could save a life.
